Project Overview
Boerderij Ondersteboven is a serene bed and breakfast in Ossenisse, Zeeland, Netherlands, nestled in a beautifully renovated barn amidst the scenic polder landscapes. Their existing website www.boerderijondersteboven.nl — was running on Joomla 3.10.
The client partnered with Ebizon Digital to upgrade the website to Joomla 5.2.3. The goal was to ensure a smooth migration of content, templates, and functionalities while preserving SEO rankings and improving the site’s performance and security.
Project Objectives
- Upgrade the Joomla CMS from version 3.10 to 5.2.3.
- Ensure seamless transfer of all modules, content, and functionality.
- Maintain existing SEO integrity (URLs, metadata, redirects).
- Replace incompatible extensions with modern, supported alternatives.
- Perform extensive testing and validation before deployment.
Project Execution
1. Staging Setup
The existing website was cloned into a staging environment to perform all upgrade activities safely without affecting the live site.
2. Compatibility Checks
- Verified hosting and PHP environment compatibility with Joomla 5.
- Used Joomla’s Pre-Update Check tool for extension analysis.
- Identified incompatible extensions and proposed alternatives.
3. Sequential Upgrades
- Upgraded Joomla 3.10.x to the latest patch.
- Migrated from Joomla 3 → Joomla 4 ensuring all extensions and templates were functional.
- Upgraded from Joomla 4 → Joomla 5, adapting newer frameworks and resolving extension conflicts.
4. Extension & Template Reconfiguration
- Replaced legacy extensions like RokSprocket and S5 Accordion Menu with SP Page Builder and Easy Accordion Menu.
- Implemented the Helix Ultimate Framework for enhanced theme flexibility.
- Configured contact forms, search functionality, photo galleries, and agenda filters (by year, month, category, etc.).
- Integrated and validated JEvents for event management (event listings, categories, and calendar views).
- Rebuilt and verified Contact Form Submissions, ensuring form data, email notifications, and spam filtering function correctly.
5. Template Handling (Boerderijondersteboven)
- The active site template Boerderijondersteboven was identified as Joomla 3–compatible only.
- Analyzed template structure, overrides, and style dependencies to ensure smooth migration.
- Converted layout and design elements into a Helix Ultimate–based structure while preserving the original look and responsive behavior.
- Updated custom module positions, CSS overrides, and template settings for Joomla 5 compatibility.
- Conducted front-end testing to confirm consistent appearance and layout across all devices.
6. Frontend Login & User Management
- Configured and managed frontend login and user account features for registered users.
- Ensured smooth access to edit profiles, submit or edit content, and manage user permissions.
- Fixed issues related to login redirects, user group assignments, and form validation post-upgrade.
- Verified security settings, ensuring proper access control between frontend users and administrators.
7. Quality Assurance & Testing
- Conducted Migration Testing for data integrity and consistency.
- Performed Functional Testing under development and client teams.
- Ensured all modules, links, and galleries worked flawlessly.
- Verified SEO elements such as meta-tags, URLs, and redirects.
8. User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
- A 1–2 week UAT phase allowed the client to test the upgraded site and submit feedback via Zoho Tickets.
- Final bugs were resolved before launch, ensuring readiness for deployment.
9. Deployment & Go-Live
- Created full site and database backups using Akeeba Backup.
- Reconfigured SEO settings, security, and PHP parameters.
- Performed final sanity testing before going live.
